Anne Heche was involved in a car accident on Friday that left her “badly burned” and “intubated” in hospital, TMZ reports.
The 53-year-old “Vanished” actress was reportedly driving her blue Mini Cooper down a suburban Los Angeles street around noon when it crashed into an apartment complex garage.
According to the outlet, bystanders tried to help Heche out of the vehicle, but she allegedly backed up and drove away before crashing into another house where her car was “engulfed” in flames.
It appears that Heche may have been under the influence of alcohol, as a bottle with a red cap was seen in the car’s cup holder shortly before the accident. However, the Los Angeles Police Department could not immediately be reached.
Aerial shots of video of the crash obtained by Fox11 show smoke billowing from the home it crashed into.
Sources told TMZ that Heche is currently intubated in the hospital, but is “expected to live.”
“His condition prevents doctors from conducting tests to determine if he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” the outlet also reported.
Heche, known for her high-profile romance with Ellen DeGeneres in the ’90s, has been outspoken about her previous battle with substance abuse.
“I drank. I smoked. I took drugs. I had sex with people. I did everything I could to take the shame out of my life,” she told ABC News in 2020, adding that her choices were a result of her painful childhood which was due to that her father, Donald Heche, sexually abused her.
“I’m not crazy,” the “Six Days Seven Nights” star also said at the time. “But it’s a crazy life. I grew up in a crazy family and it took me 31 years to get the crazy out of me.”
Representatives for Heche could not be immediately reached.
