After Batgirl’s Cancellation, Supergirl Might Be In Trouble Too

After Batgirl’s surprise cancellation, all eyes are on Supergirl…and apparently it’s not looking good.

According to Rolling Stone, the Warner Bros. Discovery shakeup goes beyond DC’s next Batgirl movie: It’s likely to affect other superpowered projects as well.

“Supergirl, which is in development, is not likely to move forward,” said people familiar with the project.

Warner Bros. has been working on a Supergirl movie since it was announced in 2018. Since then, 26-year-old Sasha Calle has been cast in the lead role as Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl. While fans recently went wild after seeing her in the Supergirl outfit, it seems the upcoming movie is also in danger of being cancelled.

The new Supergirl was set to make her big screen debut in the upcoming Flash solo movie starring Ezra Miller, with her own solo movie to follow. But now this movie is unlikely to happen, apparently also casting serious doubt on her appearance in The Flash.

It sounds like Batgirl’s cancellation has far-reaching implications for the troubled studio, which has also begun shedding HBO Max Originals from its online streaming service.

Of course, Supergirl isn’t the only superhero nervously eyeing the chop: DC has also previously committed to a Blue Beetle movie starring Cobra Kai’s Xolo MaridueƱa, and the planned Black Canary movie starring Jurnee Smollett.

All DC Movies and Series Affected by the Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

You have to wonder if these projects will go ahead and what other DC projects are in the line of fire. Either way, it looks like Warner Bros. Discovery is undergoing a major shakeup, and beloved DC properties aren’t clear on where they stand.

Despite the cancellations and uncertainty, Joker 2 is moving forward with Joaquin Phoenix returning to the role of Arthur Fleck. But that was to be expected: after all, with 11 Academy Award nominations and a box office gross of more than a billion dollars, a sequel was inevitable.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the rest of the DCEU. Want to learn more about the Warner Bros. Discovery reorganization? We break down exactly what happened to Batgirl and take a look at which other DC heroes are up to the axe.
