Anne Heche is expected to “recover” after a car accident in California, according to her ex-boyfriend.
Heche, 53, was reportedly intubated and remains in critical condition after she crashed her blue Mini Cooper into a garage in Los Angeles on Friday, then backed out before crashing into another house.
The car exploded after the second crash, and Heche, who reportedly suffered severe burns, was later seen flailing on a stretcher after first responders rescued her from the wrecked vehicle.
Ex-boyfriend Thomas Jane, an actor who dated Heche in 2020, told the Daily Mail that he is expected to make it.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to Anne, one of the true talents of her generation. Thank God no one else was hurt,” Jane said in a statement, according to the outlet.
A neighbor who saw Heche’s car speeding ran to the scene after the accident, he told the Daily Mail, and helped the homeowner pull her and her pets out of the burning structure.
He then went to help Heche, who was squeezed between the driver’s seat and an air bag.
“I tried to talk to her several times to ask if she was okay, but she wasn’t responding so I had to go over there,” David Manpearl said. “I was able to open the rear door of the car and crawled halfway into the interior. This time when I asked her if she was okay, she said no.”
Manpearl got out of the car as the flames overtook him.
“I was sure the driver was dead,” he said. “That he had been burned. It took at least 30 minutes for the fire department to put out the flames, extract the car, and get her out of the car.”
It took nearly 60 firefighters a little over an hour to put out the fire and rescue Heche from the burned and wrecked car in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. The house he hit was destroyed.
A disheveled-looking Heche was photographed behind the wheel of her car after the first crash, with bystanders apparently trying to get her to stop driving. One photo showed a container with a red lid that appeared to be a bottle of vodka.
“We really had a multifaceted incident here,” LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said after the crash. “We had a significant traffic collision, we had a woman trapped inside of that, we had a car that caught fire, and then we had a house that had a significant fire that has a red tag. At this point it’s destroyed.”
Heche, who has admitted to using drugs and alcohol in the past, dated Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000. After their relationship ended, a shocked and disoriented Heche drove to Fresno and knocked on a stranger’s door. She was briefly hospitalized after the incident.
Heche has said in previous interviews that her father, Don Heche, abused her from when she was a little girl until she was 12 years old. Don Heche died of AIDS in 1983 and Anne has said that she lived a double life as a closeted homosexual.
Heche’s brother, Nathan, was killed in a car accident three months after their father’s death, which Anne suggested was suicide.
