Manchester United striker Anthony Martial will miss his first game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion due to injury. the athletic understands
Martial, 26, has suffered a minor hamstring problem and the timing of his return is unclear, although he is expected to be able to return for the trip to Brentford on August 13. If he can’t recover by then, his next chance to play would come against Liverpool on August 22.
He left the pitch in Oslo, where United played Atlético Madrid in pre-season, taking his leg.
His injury leaves Erik ten Hag potentially without numbers on the front line.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who told United he wanted to leave the club earlier this summer, only appeared once in pre-season during his last game against Rayo Vallecano. The 37-year-old left the game before regulation time after being substituted.
Marcus Rashford, the England international, can also play as a centre-forward.
Ten Hag has been buoyed by the return of Jadon Sancho from illness.
Martial has returned to the United first team under new manager Erik ten Hag after spending the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla.
The France international failed to make much of an impact in La Liga, registering just one goal in 12 appearances in all competitions.
Before that, Martial had only scored once in the first half of the season at United, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick.
But Martial has been in fine form during Ten Hag’s first pre-season as United manager, scoring three goals.
