New TikTok Challenge Aimed at Kia and Hyundai Car Owners

LOWER MORELAND TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — A warning to Kia and Hyundai car owners: a new TikTok challenge makes them especially vulnerable to car thieves.

Social media videos are being posted by people across the country, daring teens and young adults to break into Kias and Hyundais and steal them.

The Lower Moreland Township Police Department said they are not only encouraging theft, they are also encouraging the perpetrators to go on dangerous and reckless joy rides and vandalize the vehicles.

“Any time you leave your vehicle, even if it’s just for a couple of seconds, we want to make sure you lock your cars and keep valuables out of sight,” Detective Justin Brommer said.

Police also said that in many cases criminals use USB cables to jump start vehicles, so if you have a USB cable or charger in your car, hide it or take it with you.

Also, remember to never leave a running vehicle unattended. Park in a safe, well-lit area and check your surroundings. Police also said they might consider getting a steering wheel lock.

And if you watch the videos on TikTok, be sure to report them to slow the spread of this type of challenge.

In a statement, Kia said they are aware of an increase in vehicle thefts in our area, but newer models and models have an immobilizer applied. He also said that all Kia vehicles for sale in the US meet or exceed federal motor vehicle safety standards.
