Official: Chelsea sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion

Chelsea’s latest big splash in the summer transfer window, which takes our spending to over £150m, comes with plenty of hair and high expectations as 24-year-old left-back Marc Cucurella joins from Brighton & Hove Albion.

A dramatic week in which this transfer happened, then didn’t happen, then happened again, has now been seen on the line for a £55+7m transfer fee, with Cucurella signing a six-year deal to tie him to the club. until 2028. In exchange, Brighton will also get our young centre-back Levi Colwill on a season-long loan.

Cucurella had been on our radar for a while now, and Chelsea made a big play (perhaps as big as €30m) for his signing a couple of years ago, though we’d end up signing Ben Chilwell instead and Cucurella would end up staying on. Spain with Getafe. He would eventually move to England twelve months later, and impressed well enough with Brighton to be named their Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year, and earn his move to SW6.

Mostly a left-back, Cucurella has also played a decent amount of left-centre back in a back three, giving us a lot of flexibility on that side of defence.

“Marc is an elite defender of proven quality in the Premier League and further strengthens our team heading into the new season. We continue to work on and off the pitch and we are delighted that Marc is part of the present and future at Chelsea.”
